Shakima Ivory
Shakima Ivory is a committed advocate for workers’ rights and community empowerment, with more than 20 years of service at the New York City Housing Authority and a proud Local 1180 member since 2005. Rising through multiple roles, she served as an Administrative Manager for more than a decade.
Elected as a Shop Steward in 2015, Shakima has been a strong voice for members, completing Shop Steward and Grievance Handling training courses in 2016. She has led steward elections, coordinated workplace meetings, and actively engaged members in union initiatives. In 2020, she was nominated to the Local 1180 Election Committee and later became a Staff Representative. In 2025, she was appointed as an Executive Board Member-at-Large and continues to serve as Co-Chair of the Women’s Committee.
Shakima’s leadership extends beyond her workplace. In 2020, Shakima was nominated to serve on the Local 1180 Election Committee, ensuring fair and transparent elections in accordance with federal law and union bylaws. Her passion for service is also evident in her community work – one of her proudest roles was serving as a Girl Scout Troop Leader at Penn-Wortman Community Center. She inspired young girls through interactive activities, leadership development, and weekend trips to Camp Kaufmann, where she provided opportunities for girls to explore new experiences outside their borough. She also mentored young Black women through The Mary J. Blige Foundation and NYCHA’s Teen Girls’ Initiative, fostering leadership and life skills.
A champion for equity and empowerment, Shakima continues to uplift others through advocacy and mentorship. She enjoys traveling, Netflix, and good books.
